Is Homeschool Even Right for Us?
If you're a few weeks into considering homeschool and still feel unsure, you're not alone — and you're probably not doubting the wrong thing.
Most new homeschool parents aren't actually wondering "can I teach my kid math." They're wondering whether they've picked the right type of homeschool. And that's a fair thing to get stuck on, because "homeschooling" isn't one thing — it's several different legal paths that all get lumped under the same word.
Here's the short version of what's actually out there:
Private School Affidavit (PSA)/Independent. You file as a private school of one (your home) with the state. Most independence, most responsibility — you're in charge of records, curriculum, and requirements.
Charter school (independent study). You enroll in a public charter that supports homeschoolers. You often get funding for curriculum and enrichment classes, plus a credentialed teacher checking in — but also more oversight and reporting. (Not every state has this model, check with your state!)
Hybrid programs. Part-time, in-person classes, part-time at home. A good middle ground if your child wants some classroom time and peer interaction without full-time school.
Private umbrella / private school programs. You enroll under an existing private school that "umbrellas" homeschoolers, handling the legal filing for you.
Microschools and pods. Small, informal groups of homeschool families teaching together, often rotating houses or splitting subjects by parent strength.
None of these is objectively "better." They trade off differently on freedom, funding, oversight, and community. The families who feel most confident aren't the ones who found the "correct" answer — they're the ones who matched the type to what their family actually needs this year.
