Find Your Homeschool "Why" Before the Hard Week Hits
At some point — usually not in week one, when everything's still new and exciting — every homeschool parent has a hard week. A kid who won't cooperate. A curriculum isn't clicking. A comment from a relative that makes you question the whole decision.
The families who push through that week aren't the ones with the best-organized bookshelf. They're the ones who wrote their "why" down before they needed it, so they have something concrete to reread instead of trying to reconstruct their reasoning in the middle of a hard moment.
Your "why" doesn't need to be profound or perfectly worded. It just needs to be true and specific to your family. A few honest starting points:
- What's the one thing about traditional school that wasn't working for your child?
- What do you want your child's day-to-day to actually feel like?
- What would you regret not trying?
Write two or three sentences. Put them somewhere you'll actually see again — the inside cover of your planner, a sticky note, your phone's notes app. That's it. That's the whole exercise.
It sounds almost too simple to matter, until the week comes where it's the only thing that gets you back on track.
Module 4 of the Homeschool Course for Parents walks through this exercise in more depth, along with what to do once you've found your why.
